Air Freight Concerned About New EU Customs Code

Air freight representatives are concerned about new EU customs rules coming into force in May 2016 and whether customs authorities and trading companies will have the time and resources to prepare for the changes – particularly a requirement on cargo owners to provide guarantees to cover duty payments, something that has been optional under the current regime.
In a note to members, The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA)’s secretary general Doug Brittin said: “The Union Customs Code (UCC) is just six months away from coming into force and will have a considerable impact on businesses importing into, or exporting from, the European Union (EU). The pending regulations propose imposing an obligation on traders to provide financial guarantees for the use of temporary storage, an obligation, which can be waived, but only on the basis of a specific authorisation to be granted by EU Member States.
