NAFTA Needs a Fresh Look: Chris Christie
By Reid J. Epstein, The Wall Street Journal Apr 28, 2015
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday called for the U.S. to “take another look” at the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Mr. Christie, who is considering launching a 2016 presidential campaign, didn’t offer specifics about how he’d seek to alter the 1994 trilateral trade deal, but he would hardly be the first White House contender to propose changing it.
“I do think that we need to take another look at NAFTA,” Mr. Christie said at the State Department’s Washington Conference on the Americas. “It’s been 20 years now since NAFTA was put into effect and what’s the next chapter going to look like? We know what’s happened over the last 20 years with NAFTA, but I think we need to be talking to our neighbors about what the next generation of NAFTA will look like.”
NAFTA is an agreement between the U.S., Canada and Mexico that eliminated most tariffs and barriers to free trade between the three nations.
Mr. Christie declined to answer questions from reporters after his remarks.
