Canada, Japan to Discuss Free-Trade Agreement in Ottawa Next Week

Canadian negotiators will meet with their Japanese counterparts next week in Ottawa for another round of talks on a free-trade agreement between the two countries. The talks, the sixth between Canada and Japan, will take place July 28 to 31.
Trade Minister Ed Fast said Tuesday a trade pact between with Japan could add $3.8-billion a year to Canada’s economy and create the equivalent of 25,000 jobs. Japan, the world’s third largest economy, is also Canada’s fourth biggest export market.
“Improving access to strategic markets in the Asia-Pacific region is at the core of Canada’s long-term prosperity and a key part of our government’s ambitious pro-trade plan to create jobs and opportunities for hardworking Canadians across all regions of the country,” Mr. Fast said. “The momentum of our landmark conclusion of an agreement with South Korea is carrying us forward in the region.”Canada signed a free-trade deal with Seoul in March of this year and with the European Union (known as the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, or CETA) late last year.
