X-Ray Detection Technology
The Canada Customs and Revenue Agency is investing in new technology to further enhance Customs' abilities to stop dangerous goods from entering Canada.
The CCRA has received approximately $110 million to purchase state-of-the-art contraband detection technology to enhance our ability to protect Canadians. This funding has been allocated over a five-year period ($53 million in fiscal year 2002-2003) and includes monies for new capital purchases, maintenance, and research operations.
The CCRA purchase includes high-energy X-ray equipment capable of examining a full marine container or tractor-trailer, and detection equipment used to interdict weapons of mass destruction using chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear materials.
In October 2001, the CCRA ordered x-ray systems, ion mobility spectrometers, and other equipment to modernize our Customs ports where more equipment was needed. Installation will be completed soon.
High-energy gamma ray equipment valued at approximately $17 million have been ordered. This includes truck-mounted and stationary contraband imaging equipment employing Cobalt 60 energy sources for implementation at marine, air, and highway ports across Canada. This equipment will be delivered between October 2002 and January 2003.
