Mexico Reopens Border to Canadian Duck, Poultry Meat

After a decade-long avian flu-based ban, the government of Mexico has reopened its border to fresh Canadian duck, chicken and turkey meat, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said Thursday.
“The Government of Canada is pleased that the Mexican market has reopened for additional Canadian poultry products,” Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay said in a release.
“We continue to work closely with industry to expand international markets for high-quality Canadian products. I look forward to our continued trade relationship in agriculture and food,” MacAulay said.
Mexico closed its border to Canadian duck and poultry products in 2004 after an outbreak of avian flu. While some restrictions remain in place, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said Thursday the federal government is working with Mexican officials to lift the restrictions as soon as possible.
The Mexican market, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said, is valued at some $3 million annually for duck meat exports.
