The FDA Makes New Safety Rules for Raw Produce

Long-awaited rules issued by the Food and Drug Administration Friday are created to help prevent large-scale, deadly outbreaks of foodborne illness like those linked to fresh spinach, cantaloupes, cucumbers and other foods over the last decade.
The importer is also responsible for conducting due diligence on its suppliers through on-site audits on the supplier's facility each year and review of the supplier's record on food safety.
The rules require importers to show that the food they bring into the United States meets US safety standards. About 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die. The new rules have been praised by food safety advocates and are set to be introduced gradually over the next few years.
Under the rules, the government soon will have new oversight of the farms that grow Americans' food. FSMA directs the FDA and food producers to prevent problems across the entire food system, rather than waiting to act until illness occurs. The new rules formalize industry accountability and best practices for food importers and the produce community.
