China Hints at Interest in Trade Deal with Canada

Ottawa has suggested it wants closer parity in trade before negotiations
Canada’s second-largest trade partner is interested in discussing a free-trade agreement.
Speaking to a group of Chinese-language journalists last week, China’s consul-general in Vancouver, Liu Fei, said she hopes there will be more “serious” discussions of further trade initiatives between Ottawa and Beijing soon.
An agreement to protect Canadian investors in China and Chinese investors in Canada came in to force last October and has been touted by officials in both countries as a major milestone in bilateral trade relations.
Liu said a free-trade agreement — similar to Beijing’s deal with New Zealand and a recently concluded accord with Australia — would be the next logical step.
