Renminbi Trading Hub Touted As Business Boost

‘We are a trading nation,’ B.C. finance minister says, downplaying concerns about further real estate inflation
Concerns about Vancouver’s skyrocketing housing prices will not deter B.C. from courting overseas investment, provincial Finance Minister Mike de Jong said one day before the Pacific Finance Summit begins.
The main topic under discussion at the summit is the creation of a Chinese currency renminbi (RMB) trading hub in Canada, including in cities like Vancouver and Toronto.
De Jong said he does not believe the hub, which would allow companies to settle financial transactions outside of China using the RMB as base currency, will cause additional spikes in real estate prices.
“If that’s our worst problem — that there are too many people who want to invest in B.C. — that’s a problem we’ll take,” de Jong said. “We are a trading nation. We are a trading province. We encourage people to come here to invest in our productions, we encourage them to invest in our services — and to have something to facilitate that investment is important.”
