Minister Fast Highlights Sweet Canadian Export Success

Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada Nov 18, 2014

Export Development Canada and the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service play key roles in helping SMEs grow and prosper

The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, today marked Halloween by welcoming the job-creating export success of Winnipeg-based confectioner OMG’s Candy Inc.

Export Development Canada’s (EDC’s) new Export Guarantee Program enabled OMG’s Candy to secure a key contract with a major U.S. retail chain. The Export Guarantee Program encourages bank lending to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to provide access to credit for their international business.

The Government of Canada is focused on creating the right environment for SMEs to succeed abroad and is supporting them through tools and services made available through EDC, the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, the Business Development Bank of Canada and the Canadian Commercial Corporation.

A priority sector under Canada’s Global Markets Action Plan (GMAP), the processed foods industry offers great opportunities for SMEs. With exports of more than $21 billion in 2013, the sector employs almost 200,000 Canadians.

Quick Facts

  • In 2013, Canada-U.S. trade surpassed $781 billion (goods and services), meaning that more than $2-billion worth of goods and services crosses the border daily—or over $1 million traded every minute.
  • Working with other government partners and under Canada’s Global Markets Action Plan, EDC is Canada’s export credit agency, offering innovative commercial solutions to help Canadian exporters and investors expand their international business.
  • In line with GMAP’s objective of supporting SMEs, EDC served more than 5,500 SME customers in 2013—77 percent of all customers it served—and had total export business transactions worth $14.4 billion.

Quotes

“As part of the most ambitious pro-trade plan in Canada’s history, the Harper government is focused on ensuring that Canadian SMEs have the tools they need to succeed abroad. When Canadian companies such as OMG’s Candy succeed in global markets, they create jobs back home.”

- Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade

“Export Development Canada’s backing was important for us because it meant we could obtain the financing we needed to fulfill our U.S. contract. With EDC as a partner, we were able to grow our company.”

- Chris Emery and Larry Finnson, Co-presidents, OMG’s Candy
