Canadian Exports to Europe on Rise

Boost comes despite EU's flat economy

Canadian exports to the European Union have climbed a whopping 40 per cent in the past year, more than double the increase in the value of shipments to the United States during the same period - although far behind our largest trading partner in total money terms.

Still impressive, nonetheless.

That's why Ottawa has coveted the EU market for years, finally reaching a free-trade agreement with Brussels in October of last year to open up exports to the 28-nation bloc even wider. When the deal is ratified in about two years - barring complications - Canada's economy can expect an annual boost of $12 billion.

The EU is already Canada's No. 2 trading partner, and growing.
