At a meeting of Canadian ports authority officials last week, federal transport minister Lisa Raitt revealed that the Tory government intends to update rules govecrning these facilities so they can handle increased flows of goods that Ottawa hopes will result from the ten trade pacts signed in recent years, according to JOC.com, a B2B newsletter.
"If we are doing all of these trade agreements across the world, we need to make sure we can actually deliver the goods," Raitt said at the Association of Canadian Port Authorities' annual conference in Bathurst, N.B. The review of the Transportation Act got under way in June with the appointment of a six-member committee that will deliver its report within 18 months. The review of the law will be the first since 2001.
