Canada, EU Prepare September Summit, Raising Hopes for CETA

Top negotiators have been meeting in Brussels this week to hammer out what are now described as remaining legalistic issues.
Canada and the European Union are preparing a joint summit for late September—the first in four years—raising speculation that talks to reach a much-awaited trade deal between the two parties are finally finishing.
Although the date has yet to be finalized, the summit is set to take place in Canada, a well-informed European Commission official said this week.
Canada and the EU have not held a joint summit since May 2010 in Brussels, Belgium, just as complexities of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement were coming to the fore in areas such as intellectual property and government procurement. Previously, Canada and the EU had held a joint summit generally every year, giving Canada’s prime minister and the presidents of the EU Commission and Council a chance to touch base on ongoing issues of mutual concern.
Embassy reported in May 2013 that officials on both sides of the Atlantic were waiting for the trade deal’s final seal of approval so that they could also get the green light on the next Canada-EU summit.
