5 Reasons Canada Needs a Trade Deal with Korea Now
Financial Post Feb 18, 2014
EU auto exports to Korea have virtually doubled since the Korea-EU FTA
Here are five reasons why we believe a Free Trade Agreement with Korea makes eminent sense now for Canada:
1. Since Korea concluded an FTA with the United States and the EU, Canadian exporters have been at a competitive disadvantage in the Korean market. Our exports have dropped by nearly one-third. That trend will continue with the just-concluded FTA with Australia and the risks to Canadian jobs will only increase over time unless we provide level terms of access for our exporters.
2. An agreement with Korea will benefit all regions of Canada – agriculture, food, seafood and consumer products, aerospace and medical devices, mining, metals and forest products. Economic models project that an FTA would boost sales to Korea by nearly one-third and our GDP by almost $2-billion annually. (Korean tariffs are on average three times higher than Canada’s – 13.3% versus 4.3% – so the prospect of an FTA would be in Canada’s favour on tariffs alone.)
