Time For Canada to Think Big on Trade

There’s endless chatter about Canada’s outdated supply management system, now that we’ve been invited into the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade talks.
The TPP entry price was for Canada to put its protectionist regime for dairy, poultry and egg producers on the negotiating table. With all the atmospherics in the media, you’d think supply management was the centre of the universe.
It’s not and the federal government and members of Parliament should remember this and not be distracted by the intense lobbying efforts of supply-managed farmers, a group that’s been sheltered under this Soviet-style regime for far too long. They’re only out to protect the inflated value of their production quotas. Let’s not be fooled into believing they’re somehow championing the broader public interest.
